TOWN OF PITTSFIELD, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Trees from the Green Bay Packers’ First Downs for Trees program were picked up Tuesday.
The program donated 408 trees this year. Communities around the Green Bay area will receive a couple dozen trees to plant.
The program is a way for the Packers to offset some of the carbon emissions they create when traveling to away games.
“The idea is that trees will remove carbon from the air,” said Brian Friedrich, regional forester for Wisconsin Public Service. “When you’re traveling and moving a team like that, you want to try to find ways to maybe mitigate some of the emission issues.”
A wide variety of oaks and elm will be donated to prevent diseases from spreading and killing the trees.
In the 12 years the Packers have been doing this program, 6,000 trees have been donated.
