OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A new middle school in Oshkosh broke ground Wednesday.
Community members attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Vel Phillips Middle School on Kentucky Street.
The construction of the Vel Phillips Middle School is part of the $107 million capital referendum that the Oshkosh community supported in November of 2020.
This school replaces both Merrill Middle and Webster Stanley Middle schools. It’s part of the district’s plan to consolidate 20 schools to 14.
Kristi Levy, current principal at both Merrill and Webster middle schools, was named principal of the new school in July 2021.
Vel Phillips is set to open for the 2023-2024 school year.
Once it’s completed, a new elementary school will be built on the current Webster Stanley site.
The school is named after Vel Phillips, Wisconsin’s first Black secretary of state.
