GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Valentine’s day is just around the corner.
If you’re thinking about going the extra mile, be prepared to spend more.
Red roses, purple violets and plenty of other variety bouquets are top of mind this Valentine’s Day.
But the bad news for customers is prices are going up.
Owner of Roots on 9th, Jamie Hemenway – Peotter says business has been relatively good during the pandemic, but things have recently changed.
“We’ve seen a hit on almost every aspect of the business,” said Hemenway-Peotter.
Roots on 9th says its not just the holiday making prices go up. It’s overall supply, demand and shipping increases.
“I think it stems back from the growers, the demand is so high right now that they are just not able to keep up with the growing,” said Hemenway-Peotter.
Inventory that usually comes in two weeks is sometimes taking a couple of months.
“Getting it to us has been a challenge too like freight and shipping charges and stuff right now,” said Hemenway-Peotter.
Hemenway-Peotter says the shop can accommodate all budgets – so if you can’t afford the dozen red roses that are averaging more than $90, you can grab some greenery instead.
If you don’t want to budge on your favorite dining spot, Plae Bistro General Manager Gabe Gomez says make reservations now.
“This year in the books we already have more reservations than we did even before the pandemic,” said Gomez.
Since Valentine’s Day is on a Monday this year, many local restaurants are choosing to stay closed, as usual.
Gomez says that’s attracting even more customers to places that are open, like Plae Bistro.
“I respect that they want to be closed but Valentine’s Day is usually a very good day for business,” said Gomez.
Gomez suggests celebrating with your loved one early, because really the exact day shouldn’t matter, it’s all about showing someone they’re loved.
Roots on 9th says if you order your flowers before the end of this week, you will still get that pre- Valentine’s Day price.
