GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — Afghan refugees are already being resettled in Green Bay.
Karmen Lemke is with Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Green Bay and says 37 have already settled in town.
“These are folks that have received the ability to come here,” said Lemke. “Whether they had been working along side of the US in Afghanistan during the war or are coming here through some other special immigrant documentation.”
Eventually, 125 refugees are expected to resettle in the area.
“Our families are ranging from individual single males who are here alone, currently waiting for other family to join them, as well as some young families, and young families who were expecting their first child,” Lemke explained.
How many come to the area isn’t up to the charity. It’s up to the federal government.
“So we don’t have a lot of input, the input we provide is; ‘this is how many people we can accommodate based on our community resources and based on how the community has shared with us that they will help’,” Lemke told WTAQ.
Refugees are helped with basic needs and eventually helped with finding a job and becoming established.
