APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Appleton’s Juneteenth celebration brought people from the Fox Valley to Jones Park downtown Sunday afternoon.
The event had been held at City Park in years past.
Last year’s celebration was virtual, because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The gathering, put on by African Heritage, Inc. is a commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States.
“We’re out here, celebrating freedom, and now that we’re free, everybody is free, so it’s a community freedom fest, focusing on the African-American experience,” said Sabrina Robins, a board member with African Heritage, Inc.
The event offered people the opportunity to experience several kinds of food, live music, a carnival group parade, and a petting zoo.
African Heritage, Inc. also partnered with Prevea Health to offer COVID-19 shots to guests.
This was the 11th year of the Juneteenth celebration.
