FOND DU LAC COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Authorities in Fond du Lac County have recovered the body of a man whose description matches one of the two victims who went missing on Monday on Lake Winnebago.
The canoeists, Dakota Goldapske, 21, and Michael Ghode, 21, both of Fond du Lac, capsized their canoe Monday night in dangerous conditions.
Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt says sonar devices, utilized by sheriff and DNR search teams, helped find one man’s body late Wednesday afternoon. Sheriff dive team members recovered the body.
The victim was found in the region of the lake rescuers were focusing their search. That’s based on the GPS coordinates obtained from the victims’ 911 calls.
The Medical Examiner’s Office will work with family members to confirm the identity of the victim.
The search for the second victim was suspended late Wednesday, due to dark conditions, continued strong winds, below freezing temperatures and turbulent waters.
Both sheriff and DNR teams will resume the search for the second victim today.
