The Madison, Wisconsin area native rose to NCAA coaching prominence after leading VCU to the 2011 Final Four as an at-large tournament bid. Smart then signed an 8-year contract extension with VCU, increasing his base pay from $350,000 to $1.2 million per year. On January 19, 2013, Smart became the second youngest active coach to win 100 games.
Smart accepted an offer to take over the Texas program in 2015, but didn’t win a single NCAA tournament game in his six year tenure with the Longhorns.
