OMRO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A brother and sister from Omro, in Winnebago County, are dead following a carjacking-police chase in Florida.
It happened Tuesday night in Daytona Beach. The Florida Highway Patrol says a carjacking suspect was speeding at 115 miles-per-hour when he turned the wrong way onto I-95 and smashed into their car.
“This is going to stay with a lot of people for a long time…We did everything that we could humanly, possibly do. Who in a million years, and as long as I’ve been doing this, would think that somebody would slam their brakes on and do a crazy U-turn and go northbound in the southbound lands of I-95? Normally, somebody gets on the ramp the wrong way. This was intentional,” said Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood. “Everything that he did was about destroying somebody’s life.”
The Omro School District identified the victims as 21-year-old Domynick Milis and 18-year-old Danycka Milis. A letter from the district listed both siblings as graduates of the district.
They were reportedly following family back from a holiday light show near the Daytona Speedway when they missed an exit.
“Those kids never had a chance. Never had a chance,” Chitwood said. “They missed the exit at the same time that this murdering thug is barreling the wrong way on I-95, and he hits them head-on…25 yard difference. If they make that exit, they’re alive. They miss it, they’re dead. Life is precious.”
Their younger brother, Drake, and cousin Kyley Larsen were in the backseat and were hurt. They were taken to a nearby hospital. Everyone in that vehicle was reportedly wearing their seatbelts. The suspect also died in the crash near Daytona Beach. Authorities say the vehicle was stolen at gunpoint from an Orlando area pizza delivery driver.
“He’s got 50 prior arrests, he has no driver’s license, he’s been incarcerated eight times in state prison, he’s got crimes in here – here’s his criminal history and he’s out walking amongst us. 200 pages…Carjacking, home invasion, robbery. He got out of prison last year for grand theft and he’s out and about,” Chitwood said. “You get on I-95 at 7:00 at night, you turn your lights off, and you’re doing 120 miles an hour? Somebody is going to get killed. And who cares if he gets killed – I don’t care if he got killed, and I don’t think anyone else really cares if he got killed…If there was fairness, he would’ve crashed into the median and killed himself. And we wouldn’t be having a discussion. But unfortunately, that’s not how God wanted it.”
