MENASHA, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Companies are turning to new ways of hiring.
“We definitely have manufacturing jobs, and we have construction jobs, and we have transportation jobs, retail jobs, health care jobs.”
Bobbi Miller, with Fox Valley Workforce Development, tells FOX 11 unemployment is lower than when the pandemic first hit in March.
“If full employment is five percent then we’re inching ever closer to that really tight labor market again. This just tells job seekers that there is more opportunity to be had locally.”
Miller says a successful statewide job fair in July, proves companies are still hiring.
“Locally we distributed all three hundred of our packets in the first two hours. Across the state, there were about 700 companies that participated in that first job fair. And almost 4,000 job seekers.”
Spectrum held a drive-thru job fair in Menasha to hire customer service representatives on Tuesday.
“The biggest challenge initially for us is not being able to bring people in.”
Spectrum Human Resources Director, Lori Alt, tells FOX 11 the drive-thru still gets people on-site.
“With covid we are not able to bring people into our building and really sit down and have that face to face interaction with them. This still gives us the opportunity to still social distance but give them a chance to see the outside of our building and have a chance to meet with us and have that actually connect.”
The state plans to hold another drive-thru job fair on Thursday.
Miller says job seekers will be able to apply to 75 different companies.
“Across the state, we coordinated efforts with all of the workforce boards and we have a total of 21 distribution sites. The same day, same time.”
The Fox Valley Workforce Development Office says changes to unemployment are likely, as the required job search unemployment waiver is anticipated to expire at the end of the month.
