Postal carriers taking part in Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive Saturday

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - This year's Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive will take place Saturday in Brown County.

On Wednesday, Brown County Executive Troy Streckenbach and Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt teamed up to help out the National Letter Carriers Association with a proclamation declaring May 10, 2014 as Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive Day.

"As a community we do come together and collaborate on addressing a lot of issues that are facing our community and one of these is bringing attention and awareness to stamping out hunger," said Streckenbach.

Postal workers will pick up non-perishable food donations left near people’s mailboxes starting at 9 a.m. for this 22nd annual food drive. During its time, Brown County residents have donated more than 1.3 million pounds of food for local food pantries. In 2013, 23 local food pantries benefitted from the collection.

“You get a lot of satisfaction because you do a lot of good for the people that are unfortunate and in the community that they might not have jobs or there’s a lot of senior people out there that can’t put food on the table because of the high costs today,” said local mail carrier Tim Voelker.

If you miss Saturday's collection, Voelker says postal workers will still pick up donations left at the mailbox on Monday and Tuesday.
