Authorities warn of identity thieves using one scam to pull off another scam

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Identity thieves are apparently turning their crimes into an art form, by using one scam to pull off another.

Dane County sheriff's deputies said two people were called by somebody who claimed they worked for "Windows" -- and they wanted to run diagnostic tests on the potential victims' computers. Once they get in, officials say the thieves gain access to everything on a victim's machine -- bank and credit card data, and other personal information.

Dodge County officials also reported a similar case in Fox Lake recently. The new scam came as the recent Heartbleed virus had many of us changing our passwords.

Also, federal officials warned this week against using Internet Explorer for now, after hackers found a way in and seized data from larger computer systems. Microsoft has posted instructions on getting around that problem, while it works on a patch that can be downloaded.

On May 12th, the Dane County sheriff's department is offering a free technology safety seminar in Mazomanie. Those interested are asked to call Mazomanie Police.
