KENOSHA, Wis. (WSAU) -- Investigators are testing the soil underneath the former Kenosha Chrysler plant for contamination.

The plant that once stood at the site has already been demolished, but before any further development can start at the site, officials need to know if the factory leached any chemicals or pollutants into the ground during operations.

The company never tested the soil while the plant was operational, so City Administrator Frank Pacetti says Kenosha and the state are now on the hook to make sure the site is safe going into the future.

Funding for the remediation process will be paid by the Department of Natural Resources.
