Phantoms fall at State

They didn't wait 81 years for this.  The West De Pere Phantoms returned to the WIAA  Boys State Basketball tournament for the first time since 1933 but are heading home after falling in the Division 2 finals to Wisconsin Lutheran 64-44.    The Vikings jumped out to a 10-0 lead and never trailed.  West De Pere closed to within 4 points in the third quarter but Lutheran went on another 10-0 run to seize control.   The fifth ranked Phantoms struggled mightily with the Lutheran defensive quickness and toughness, getting forced into 24 turnovers.  They averaged 9 a game during the season.  Cold shooting didn't help either as West De Pere on only 17 of 46 attempts for 37%.   Junior Cody Schwartz led the scoring with 15 points, the only player in double figures.   Chandler Diekvoss, headed to Richmond University next year, finishing his career hitting only one of 6 shots from the floor, Connor Konshak made only three of ten.  West De Pere finished 20-5 and still talked of pride at earning just their second ever trip to state, only to have it end with disappointment.  "We didn't play our best today," said Head Coach Andy Werner.    Wisconsin Lutheran improves to 25-2 and they reach the D2 title game for the second year in a row after falling to the Pulaski Red Raiders a year ago.
