UNDATED (WSAU) -- An off-duty State Trooper caught a burglar red-handed at his rural Waupaca County home.

Trooper Jim Binder awakened to let his pet outside at 2:20 a.m. Monday. He noticed a strange car in his driveway about 100 yards from the house. Binder got dressed and put on his duty belt and sidearm went to investigate. What he found was a man with snow covered legs who said he ran out of gas... but then admitted entering the trooper’s shed.

Waupaca County Sheriff’s Department deputies were called, and took the man to jail after discovering stolen property in his car. The thief almost got away with the trooper’s power tools, a shotgun, and several other items.

Based on items found in the car, investigators believe the suspect may have been involved in several burglaries in at least four counties. The man’s name has not yet been released.
