New study says U.S. high school grads are less ready for college

UNDATED (WTVB) - More evidence of the task ahead for the U.S. to catch up to the education bar set by many countries around the world. High school graduates might be less ready for college and the workplace, based on America's most widely-used college entrance tests. The College Board is out with a new report today that shows only 43% of this year's graduating seniors scored high enough on the SAT to indicate they'll succeed in the first year of college. That follows last month's announcement by the ACT that only 26% of high school graduates hit college readiness targets in English, reading, math, and science.

The ACT figure is barely ahead of last year's 25% mark and only three points higher than the average from five years ago.  Average SAT scores have been flat the past five years, according to the College Board.
