WIAA girls state basketball, volleyball remain at Resch Center through 2020

ASHWAUBENON, WI (WTAQ) - Wisconsin's high school girls' basketball and volleyball tournaments will stay at the Resch Center.

That's after the WIAA and PMI Entertainment agreed to a deal that runs through 2020.

"It culminates several months of very, very collegial work and efforts on the part of WIAA staff, PMI staff, the Stadium Board and Convention and Visitors Bureau staff here in Green Bay," says WIAA Executive Director Dave Anderson. "It was certainly influenced by the terrific reaction and response that we have always felt and enjoyed here at the Resch Center."

2011 was the first spring in the girls' basketball tournament's 38-year history the games were played outside of Madison.

"People who came here saw an atmosphere that was created for them. Every seat in the venue is a good seat," says WIAA Associate Director Deb Hauser. "Girls thrive off of excitement and emotion and noise, and when they heard, felt and sense that, they felt special. That then extended to their hotels."

Greater Green Bay Convention and Visitors Bureau President Brad Toll says both have a big economic impact, but it varies year-to-year.

"It depends on how many teams are traveling, how many teams are local, but March and November are two fantastic times of the year to have events like these," says Toll, who anticipates both tournaments combine for a little less than $4 million in yearly economic impact.

The girls' volleyball tournament has been held at the Resch Center for 10 years. This year's tournament is scheduled for November 7-9.

The girls' basketball tournament will be played March 20-22, 2014.
