Alabama was the biggest country act of the 1980s, so it's hard to believe their new tribute album, Alabama & Friends , marks the highest chart position they've ever held on the Billboard 200 chart. The project, which features Jason Aldean , Kenny Chesney , Luke Bryan and Florida Georgia Line and more singing Alabama's hits with them, bows at #8 this week. According to Yahoo! Music , the group's previous peak on that chart was #10 in April 1983 with The Closer You Get… . Alabama has two new songs on Alabama & Friends along with the collaborative versions of their hits.
Of note, Alabama had the #1 spot on Billboard 's Country Albums tally for 124 weeks in the 1980s, but that was before Nielsen Soundscan started tracking albums sales digitally in 1991. Back then, the charts were based on manual reports from retailers. Once the system was standardized, country artists like Garth Brooks and Shania Twain began topping the overall albums tally.
