APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) - A man involved in a standoff with Appleton police has surrendered peacefully after releasing two infants who were inside a home with him.

Appleton Police Sgt. David Lund says the standoff began around 3:30 p.m. after a family member called 911 and said the man was armed and making threats.

Police are not sure if the threats were directed at others in the home or himself.

Police converged on a home in the 1300 block of South Harmon Street near Reid Golf Course.

Police tried for hours to make contact with the man.

Sgt. Lund says they were able to finally make contact during the 8 o’clock hour. He eventually put the two kids, who were both under the age of one, in a stroller and wheeled them outside where a SWAT officer took them to safety.

They were both unharmed.

The man then fled back inside the house.

Negotiators continued to reach out to the man, who eventually surrendered around 10:30 p.m.

Police say the man was not the father of the infants.
