GB Mayor pursues St. John's homeless shelter as possible daytime shelter

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - The Green Bay city council is considering making changes to the St. John the Evangelist homeless shelter’s permit as it pursues establishing a daytime place for the homeless.

Mayor Jim Schmitt wants to sit down with Bishop David Ricken in the next week to get the Catholic Diocese of the Green Bay to consider opening a resource center at the downtown shelter.

At Tuesday's meeting, the city council voted 11-1 against revisiting the shelter’s permit until after the meeting.

Back in September, a homeless task force announced plans for a daytime shelter and was set to sign a lease with Commercial Horizons. They own the building where the Wisconsin Jobs Center is currently housed. However, by the end of the week a deal had fallen through for unknown reasons.

Mayor Schmitt says it’s vital that a daytime homeless shelter be in operation and wants St. John's, a non-profit, to step up to fill that need.

St. John the Evangelist is a night-time shelter and closes during the day.

Homeless guests have become a growing complaint for business owners, police and others in the downtown during the day.
