Kelly Clarkson has been on Cloud 9 lately thanks to her recent wedding and the success of her Christmas album, but unfortunately, a sad event has made her come crashing down.

TheCountryVibe.com reports that Thursday night in Nashville, during a benefit show for the charity Musicians on Call, Kelly told the audience several times that she was having a really bad day, and then revealed why: her beloved dog Joplin, a black poodle mix she adopted in 2011, had died earlier that day.   She added, "Crap, I didn't mean to mention it," and then started to tear up.  She had to struggle to compose herself to sing, appropriately, "Stronger."

Back in October, Kelly posted a photo of herself cuddling with Joplin, and tweeted, "I'm just gonna say it... he's my soulmate." Referring to her husband, she added the hashtag "#sorrybrandon."

During the intimate show, the website reports, Kelly performed many of her hits, several selections from her Christmas disc Wrapped in Red, plus a solo version of "Don't You Wanna Stay," her hit duet with Jason Aldean .

Proceeds from the event went to the Nashville chapter of Musicians on Call , which brings music -- both live and recorded -- to the bedsides of patients in hospitals and other healthcare facilities.
