Two men arrested in alleged Door County arson case

DOOR COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) - Door County investigators say a man's home was set on fire because he is a registered sex offender.

Authorities say the alleged arson happened in the Town of Gardner early Saturday morning.

The trailer was home to 39-year-old Jason Johnson, who moved in about a month ago.

On Saturday morning, Door County Sheriff Terry Vogel says they responded to the fire and found a gas can nearby.

“We initially then did interview a subject who also had the odor of gasoline on him,” Vogel told FOX 11, who asked if that subject was 24-year-old T.J. Robert Hunt.

“It was, yes,” replied Vogel.

Hunt, and 25-year-old Justin Baker, both of Gardner were booked into the Door County Jail Sunday.

Prosecutors indicated Monday the two could face arson and reckless endangerment charges. They have yet to be formally charged.

Police say the two set the blaze because the man who lives there is a convicted sex offender.

"That was the motive behind it,” said Vogel.

Vogel says Johnson has every right to live where he is.

"Even though he may be a convicted felon, on a sensitive type of crime, these citizens do not have the right to retaliate,” said Vogel.

Hunt and Baker's bond is set at $15,000 and $5,000 - respectively. The two are scheduled back in court next week.

Police say the two had been drinking before they set the fire.
