WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) - If you see a purple contraption hanging in a tree this summer… no, you’re not just seeing things. The purple boxes are traps used to catch the Emerald Ash Borer, and track its anticipated trek across the state. Donna Gilson is spokesperson for the Wisconsin Dept. of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection, and says, “What we’re trying to do is detect new infestations of emerald Ash Borer. This is not a means of controlling Emerald Ash Borer. If you see them it does not mean that we have found Emerald Ash Borer. We’re looking of it to try and stay ahead of it a little bit.” The public is being asked to please allow workers on private property to set up the traps, which will be placed on a scientifically determined grid. There’ll be about 1,100 of the traps set with the majority of those located in the northern half of the state.

Gilson added that Central Wisconsin appears to be free of the pest for now, as long as it doesn’t get spread through the transporting of firewood. According to Gilson, “That’s the worry in Central Wisconsin right now. It’s not the natural spread, it’s that someone would bring it in from one of the infested areas of the state.”

EAB has already been confirmed in 13 counties around the state: Brown, Crawford, La Crosse, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Rock, Trempealeau, Vernon, Walworth, Washington and Waukesha.
