ASHWAUBENON, WI (WTAQ) - The WIAA girls state basketball tournament may be staying at the Resch Center for a little longer.
The WIAA Board of Control has voted unanimously to open contract talks with PMI Entertainment Group for an extension through 2020.
“We’ve had an abundance of time since the tournament has ended to evaluate the whole experience and the sentiment has been universally positive,” WIAA Executive Director Dave Anderson told FOX 11. “We recognize when there’s a good fit in the right place for our tournaments. Now the Board has approved seeking to extend that agreement.”
The girls state tournament moved from Madison after 37 years to the Resch Center because of scheduling issues this season and was received with overwhelming support. The tournament’s attendance was more than 39,000 and that was without a local Division 1 school in the field.
In 2012, attendance for the girls state tournament at the Kohl Center in Madison was around 30,000.
Anderson said he was confident the tournament would be a success at the Resch Center.
“It didn’t surprise me or us,” Anderson said. “We were grateful (because) you never know for certain what the experience will be like not having been there. In doing our homework and doing our research, we wouldn’t have put it some place if we had a sense of impending failure. We were optimistic about it and extremely pleased.”
