BROWN COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) - Charges have been filed against a Chicago man for stealing credit cards from health club locker rooms in Brown County.
42-year-old Nicholas Soteras is facing 8 total counts in connection with the case.
Back in October, investigators first reported the thefts. Authorities provided a description of the suspect and informed local health clubs of the crimes. For a few months afterward, there were no reported thefts. But in March they started up again.
Sheriff’s officials say the Soteras was jailed in Illinois for unlawful possession of credit cards between November and February.
Invesitgators say the suspect went into locker rooms and picked locks, took credit cards and then re-secured the lockers.
Authorities say their break in the case came last Thursday, when an employee of the Eastside YMCA in Green Bay saw a person matching a suspect description that had been released. While at the YMCA, authorities called the Western Racquet and Fitness Club in Ashwaubenon to warn the business to be on the lookout. Minutes later, an employee called authorities to report the suspect; the employee also gave a description of the man’s vehicle. Officers stopped the vehicle as it headed south on Interstate 43 and arrested Soteras and a second person, who was questioned and later released.
Brown County officials say they are working with authorities in several counties in eastern Wisconsin to investigate similar thefts as well as purchases Soteras is believed to have made with the stolen credit cards. Items purchased include iPads, tools and cameras.
Soteras is scheduled to appear in Brown County court on Friday.
