UPDATE: Neenah city officials re-writing proposed sober server ordinance

NEENAH, WI (WTAQ) - City officials in Neenah will take more time to come up with a sober server ordinance.

It had been slated for a committee hearing Tuesday night, but it's being re-written after officials met with local bar owners.

Neenah Police Chief Kevin Wilkinson says several sticking points were brought up by the bar owners, which they are open to working with. Those include a mininum blood-alcohol level of 0.04, outlawing drinking while on the job and how the ordinance would be enforced.

"The intent was that if we went to a bar because of a problem and we recognized that the bartender was intoxicated, therefore we could give the bartender a PBT and hold them accountable," says Wilkinson.

Wilkinson says everyone agrees that intoxicated bartenders and servers are bad for business, along with the community, but it's the wording of the ordinance that's key in keeping bar owners from being the targets.

"And then because we license bartenders, we could use that as a tool to hold the bartender accountable for their behavior. If they get a couple of those, maybe they don't get a bartenders' license anymore, maybe they get suspended or revoked," Wilkinson says.

It's expected to be re-introduced to a city committee next month.
