Barneveld advances to final

The Barneveld Golden Eagles will have a chance to avenge its only loss of the season when it meets Wisconsin Rapids Assumption in the Division 5 state championship game on Saturday.  The Golden Eagles improved to 27-1 with a 54-45 victory over previously undefeated South Shore this afternoon at the Resch Center.  The Cardinals, with the tournament field's smallest enrollment of 42 students, had the biggest pair of sisters on the floor, 6-3 senior Emily Gustafson and 6-3 sophomore Megan, the state's highest scoring girls player this year, averaging over 31 points a game.  Barneveld coach Jim Young said his girls battled hard on the inside to counter the big height advantage and on offense, executed well to get open shots and it paid off.  The Eagles led 15-10 after the first quarter and stretched the lead to 29-19 at halftime.  The Cardinals closed to within five in the second half, but would get no closer.  Megan Gustafson scored a game high 26 points.  Janice Anderson, the younger sister of former Wisconsin Badger star Jolene Anderson, added 9.  Rachel Slaney led Barneveld with 15 points, 13 coming in the second half. Hannah Whitish scored 11 and Madi Laube added 10.  South Shore finishes 26-1 after making their third trip to state.  Barneveld will now get that rematch with Assumption, a 44-41 winner during a holiday tournament, to not only try to even the score, but bring home what would be the 5th state title in school history.
