House version of farm bill has 5 times food benefit program cuts than Senate

WASHINGTON D.C. (WTAQ) - The House is getting closer to passing a new five-year Farm Bill.

Dozens of amendments were approved quickly last night, including 35 changes in a single vote.

The House decided to wait until Thursday to vote on an amendment from La Crosse Democrat Ron Kind. It would place new limits on federal subsidies to crop insurance companies – plus limits on crop insurance premiums to wealthy farmers.

House leaders hope to complete action on the Farm Bill Thursday.

It would then head to a House-Senate conference committee to iron out differences in what the two houses approve.

The current House proposal would cut food stamp benefits by $2-billion – five times the reduction the Senate approved.

Many Republicans say food stamps should be reined in further, after the cost of the program almost doubled since the start of the recession to around $80-billion.

It now feeds an estimated one-in-every-seven Americans.

Liberals and the White House are against any cut in food stamps, saying it would cut off up to two million recipients nationwide.
