Two area teams brought home state championships in the girls softball tournament in Madison. New London captured the Division 2 title with a 2-1 victory over Baldwin-Woodville at the Goodman Diamond in Madison. It was the Lady Bulldogs first softball championship. In Division 4, Algoma scored four runs in the bottom of the 5th and held off Wausau Newman 5-4. The first softball title for the Wolves caps a big year in Algoma as the girls basketball team also won a state championship.
In the WIAA team tennis tournament, Green Bay Notre Dame reached the title match but got swept by University School 7-0 to finish second.
Four area teams are headed to the girls state soccer tournament. The De Pere Redbirds defeated Kimberly in a Division 1 sectional final 1-0 in a shootout. The game was scoreless through regulation and two overtimes before the Redbirds prevailed 4-3 on penalty kicks for their fifth trip to state and second year in a row, falling to Madison West 1-0 in last year's title game. Neenah also advanced in Division 1, Appleton Xavier in Division 2 and Menasha St. Mary's in Division 3. The tournament begins Thursday at the Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee.
The state baseball tournament opens Tuesday at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute. Division 1 quarterfinals will have Neenah play Stoughton and Bay Port facing Hartford. Semifinal games on Wednesday include Oconto against Osseo-Fairchild in Division 3 and Green Bay Notre Dame against Ellsworth in Division 2. Championship games will be played Thursday.
