Andrew Spear agrees to plead guilty to misdemeanor charges

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - A Madison man, accused of attempting to set his wife on fire, has pleaded guilty in a plea deal on Friday.

In exchange for dropping felony charges of first-degree attempted homicide and false imprisonment, 60-year-old Andrew Spear pleaded guilty to three misdemeanor charges.

Spear was accused of locking his wife in a storage locker, then pouring gasoline on her and using a lighter to start the fire.

His wife was not seriously injured.

Spear had accused his wife of having an affair with her boss, former Wisconsin Health Services Secretary Dennis Smith. She denied an affair. Smith said nothing was ever amiss in his working relationship with his staff attorney Mary Spear.

Smith resigned earlier this year.

Spear’s sentencing is scheduled for September 13.
