Rep. Ribble leaning towards supporting background check for all gun sales

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - Republican Congressman Reid Ribble says he is leaning towards supporting a universal background check for all gun purchases.

“I’m having a difficult time personally finding what the downside is, I'm not aware of what that is, and I need to know what that is” Ribble said.

Ribble was in Green Bay for a School Safety Roundtable involving area school districts leaders and private schools and will be asking sportsman later today about universal background checks.

Ribble says a it isn’t a cure-all remedy.

The second-term Representative says a majority of gun dealers he has talked to, say with no back ground checks at gun shows it's puts their business at a disadvantage.

Ribble says he is still informing his decision on a proposed assault weapons ban.

Earlier in the day, Ribble met with sheriffs, police and mental health experts during a roundtable session in the Fox Valley.

Ribble says law enforcement tells him it’s not necessarily an equipment issue or connection, but there may be something lawmakers can do with back ground checks by tightening them up.

Ribble says they also agree that we have to take a look at mental health in the country and what we do to prevent tragedies.

“A violent person will get equipment to do their killing, if they are prone to violence, so how do we get to that individual before they act” Ribble said.
