City of Green Bay, St. John's homeless shelter settlement near

GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - The Catholic Diocese of Green Bay and city officials may be near a settlement in the ongoing dispute over the St. John's homeless shelter.

Last month, the city cited the shelter for allegedly violating its conditional use permit of 64 residents. The shelter could be fined $500 plus court costs for each violation of the permit.

Officials from the shelter and diocese have said they would not turn anyone away due to the limit.

Now, the city attorney's office says a pre-trial conference in municipal court next Tuesday has been taken off the calendar.

"It is in the best interest of both the city and the shelter to work together," says Shelter Director Alexia Wood. "And we as a shelter are happy that if a resolution can be reached, we can move forward."

Both Wood and the city attorney's office refused to comment on the specifics of the private talks.

Wood says they continue to utilize other churches to deal with overflows of residents each night. She admits that the shelter hosts, "greater than 64 guests per night."

In response to the municipal court action, the Catholic Diocese of Green Bay submitted a not guilty plea in writing to the citation.

According to the city attorney's office, a new court date would only be set if the judge finds it necessary.

But if this indeed is the end, Wood says there is some positive to take away.

"Many times a situation like this creates many more questions than it provides answers, but I certaintly think this is a great step in the community working together to make sure the needs of low-income and homeless individuals in the Green Bay area are met."
