Mining legislation not supported by Chippewa Chairman

WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) - New mining legislation is expected early in the new Legislative session in Madison. No matter what you put in that proposal, there are some who oppose mining, period.

Mike Wiggins Jr. is the Chairman of the Lake Superior Band of Chippewa. Wiggins spoke at the Wausau Labor Temple Thursday evening, saying the proposed Ashland County mine would destroy the environment and he doubts it would create as many jobs as supporters claim.

Governor Scott Walker supports the job creation with environmentally safe mining. Wiggins doesn’t believe there is such a thing as an environmentally safe mine.

A bill to streamline the permit process for mines could be discussed in the Assembly as early as next week. Supporters say the new legislation, if passed, would eliminate some red tape, but new mining operations would still have to meet guidelines by the Department of Natural Resources, the Army Corps of Engineers, and the Federal Environmental Protection Agency.
