Brad Paisley Shares the Secrets of His "Beat This Summer" Groove

If  Brad Paisley ’s new song, “Beat This Summer,” seems like one of the most unusual things you’ve ever heard on country radio, it’s no accident. Brad set out to create a “fun groove” that has the feel of a great summer that’s ending too soon.

Brad says the whole idea started with a drum loop created by his co-writer  Luke Laird . To that they added two bongo drums played over two mandolins, plus what he calls “a really broke down sort of lo-fi thing.”

But what he did with the steel guitar might be the most interesting thing, similar to the sound of some rap records.

“The steel guitar on this song is actually played a lot like a turntable. Basically, you take my steel guitar player, you turn his ballcap sideways and this happens,” Brad jokes.

His eighth studio album  Wheelhouse  comes out April 9, before Brad heads out on the Beat This Summer Tour with  Chris Young  and  Lee Brice  on May 9.
