MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Wisconsin deer hunters registered almost 367,000 animals during all of the various seasons last year.

That’s five-percent more than the year before – and the DNR said the bow-and-arrow buck harvest was a state record, with almost 46-thousand antlered deer taken by archers.

Ecologist Kevin Wallenfang said hunting conditions were good throughout the fall seasons – and there were high numbers of both hunters and deer.

The final total for the November gun season was just over 245,500.  The final archery total was almost 93,500.  The December antlerless deer hunt resulted in another 27,000 deer taken. Muzzle-loaders registered just over 7,000.

Of all the state’s management units, #61 in far west central Wisconsin had the biggest deer harvest. Just under 15,000 deer were shot in a territory that includes Pepin, Pierce, Buffalo, and Trempealeau counties.
