Senate Majority Leader: Not enough support to pass abortion limits

Sen. Scott Fitzgerald (R-Juneau)
Sen. Scott Fitzgerald (R-Juneau)

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - It does not appear that two controversial abortion limits will pass in the state Legislature this session.

Senate GOP Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald says he's not sure if there's enough support in his chamber to pass the measures.

One would prohibit abortions from being covered in public employee health plans, and exempt from religious groups from having to cover contraceptives for their employees. The other bill would prohibit abortions based solely on the babies' gender.

Majority Assembly Republicans approved both measures in June. However, Fitzgerald tells the AP that his party feels like it's, "spinning our wheels" by passing bills that ultimately get tied up in court.

Lawmakers voted this past summer to require abortion doctors to have hospital admitting privileges -- but federal courts have not allowed the law to take effect.
