Contract awarded for Stillwater bridge

STILLWATER, MN / HOULTON, Wis. -- A partnership involving two large construction companies will be building a bridge that has been stalled for decades.

Minnesota and Wisconsin transportation departments awarded a 332-and-a-half million dollar contract to the Lunda/Ames Joint Venture to build the new St. Croix River bridge connecting Highway 64 from Houlton, Wisconsin to Minnesota Highway 36 in Stillwater.

Ames Construction is from Burnsville, Minnesota and Lunda Construction is based in Black River Falls, Wisconsin. The companies will build the superstructure of the new bridge, and the approach bridge connecting Minnesota Highway 36.

Construction crews will work all winter driving piles on the Minnesota side six days a week starting December 16th.

The Lunda/Ames Joint Venture bid was the lowest of three bids submitted for the project.

The new bridge will replace the historic Stillwater Lift Bridge. Landowners on the Wisconsin side and environmentalists fought this project for a quarter of a century. The states and the many users agree the new bridge is necessary for the traffic volumes that downtown Stillwater and the two-lane lift bridge cannot handle efficiently.
