WEST ALLIS, WI (WTAQ) - The mother of three young children killed in a fire in West Allis last week could soon face a possible trial on six previous child neglect charges.
24-year-old Angelica Belen is due in court May 13th for a final pre-trial hearing on six misdemeanors.
Belen was taken into custody after last Thursday’s blaze, but no charges in that case were filed as of Monday.
Prosecutors said the previous charges were connected with an incident on March 13th. They said Belen was in a craft store when she left three children in a car parked outside. Officials said her twin 4-year-old boys got out and ran around the parking lot, and they were almost hit by a vehicle.
Those twin boys – Alexis and Adrian Colon – died in last Thursday’s fire, along with their 5-year-old brother Naveli.
Officials said the kids were the only ones at home when the fire broke out. Their one-year-old brother was away at the time.
Federal, state, and local investigators are still trying to determine what caused the blaze. According to the Journal Sentinel, one of the twin boys had autism and epilepsy. The other had cerebral palsy.
