WASHINGTON D.C. (WTAQ) - U.S. Senate Republican Ron Johnson of Wisconsin failed today to block a debate on gun control.

Johnson was among 13 GOP senators vowing to stage a filibuster, in order to hold off consideration for as long as possible.

Johnson was among 31 senators – including two Democrats – to vote in favor of blocking what would be the nation’s first major gun control legislation in 20 years. 68 senators voted to proceed, paving the way for a debate and a final vote as early as next week.

Wisconsin Democrat Tammy Baldwin was among those voting to move forward. 16 Republicans joined most Democrats in keeping the debate moving – but many of them could still vote against the final version of the package, depending on any amendments passed.

Johnson said there’s no way he could support the original measure – creating mandatory background checks and records of private firearm sales at gun shows and among friends and other individuals.
