Ice and wind leads to power outages early Wednesday

WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) -  The wintry mix overnight has left about 7,000 WPS customers without power, primarily due to ice and wind.

The hardest hit area was around Oshkosh, where about 3,300 customers were without power as of 8:30 Wednesday morning. The Waupaca area has another 1,900 customers out of service.

Spokesperson Kelly Zagrzebski says the heavy, wet snow snapped several utility poles causing 270 separate outages. Technicians from Wausau and Merrill are in those areas helping local crews restore service.

Zagrzebski says there is still ice on many of the lines, and that restoration times are unpredictable.

The weather forecast calls for more late season heavy snow, and could make the situation worse.

WPS customers can follow restoration progress at their website
