OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ) - A spokesman for President Obama’s campaign says the best way to respond to 450 layoffs at the Oshkosh Corporation is to invest in education and re-training for workers.

The company said Thursday it would cut over 10 percent of the jobs in its division that makes military vehicles next March – and the firm blamed Washington for its cuts in defense spending.

On Friday, Vice President Joe Biden visited the city and spoke to 1,000 supporters at UW-Oshkosh. He did not mention the Oshkosh layoffs – but he did promise to use the money saved in ending the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to, “rebuild Wisconsin, rebuild America, rebuild this country.”

Before Biden’s speech, Obama campaign spokesman Joe Zepecki said the president vows to reinvest Iraq and Afghanistan funds toward the middle class. He said Obama’s other middle class investments have resulted in over 5 million new U.S. jobs.

Republican Mitt Romney’s camp has not commented on the Oshkosh layoffs. But Romney has pointed the effect of military spending cuts on places like Wisconsin – where Oshkosh makes military vehicles and Marinette Marine produces naval ships.
