GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - The newly expanded St. John’s Evangelist Homeless shelter in downtown Green Bay is preparing to open its doors for the winter season.
Executive Director Alexia Wood says they will already start with more residents than last year when they open on November 1st. The first night open with 18 guest last year and this year they already know of 22 guest coming in.
During the summer the city council approved an expansion on the number of beds. The shelter will now be able to handle 64 regular guest with the capacity of serving 20 additional overflow guests.
The shelter served on average about 55 people a night last season. It was a record year for them up from 42 the season before. Wood says they have added a men’s shower and locker room as well as increased their laundry capacity.
