GAB: Milwaukee voter registration eligibility problem corrected

MILWAUKEE (WTAQ) - Milwaukee officials did not check the 204 people who registered to vote Monday, to see if they were convicted felons who are not eligible to vote.

State Government Accountability Board director Kevin Kennedy told his panel Tuesday that the problem was caught and corrected. He said Milwaukee election officials were planning to retroactively check those who registered before the mistake was noticed.

Kennedy said his agency told Milwaukee’s Election Commission where it could find the proper place on the Internet to check the criminal status of those who registered.

State law prohibits convicted felons from voting until they have served all of their probation, parole, and extended supervision.

The state Republican Party is asking for the names of those who voted yesterday in Milwaukee. It was the first day that voters could use the absentee process to vote early at municipal clerks’ offices.
