GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - One of the owners of a Green Bay liquor store will stand trial on welfare fraud charges.
In Brown County court Thursday, 56-year-old Gurnek Basanti waived his right to a preliminary hearing.
Basanti is charged with allowing people to use QUEST cards to buy tobacco and liquor at Beach Road Liquor. QUEST cards work like debit cards, allowing qualified low-income residents to buy food under the state's Food Share program.
Prosecutors say Basanti and his wife, Gurdeep, would charge double the amount requested to the QUEST cards.
The store was the target of a months-long investigation. Both Basantis are due back in court November 14.
