Shooting death of Wausau man by Eau Claire cop still under investigation

EAU CLAIRE, WI (WTAQ) - State officials continue to investigate the shooting death of a Wausau man by a police officer in Eau Claire – as well as two hit-and-run crashes, a home invasion, and an SUV theft which preceded the shooting.

Authorities said they tried to stop 24-year-old Christian Peterson last Friday night, because he had failed to return to the Marathon County Jail when he was supposed to on September 20th.

A state trooper followed him to a restaurant parking lot, where he hit the patrol car and 3 others. Officials said Peterson then hit another vehicle and injured a driver near downtown Eau Claire. He then allegedly entered a home and forced the owner to give up his SUV at gunpoint.

Officers said a chase then ensued, at speeds up to 75 miles an hour in the city – and police stopped the SUV as it went the wrong way on a business street.

Officials said Peterson then ran to a Culver’s restaurant, where he tried to hijack a truck in the drive-through before he was confronted by officer Jason Ruppert. And when Peterson moved toward the officer, Ruppert shot him.

Media reports said Peterson was convicted in 2010 of leading Eau Claire area troopers on a chase of his motorcycle at up to 130 miles an hour. And he was convicted in Marathon County for possessing meth-amphetamines.

The Justice Department and the State Patrol are both involved in the ongoing investigations of the crashes and the shooting.
