APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) - Appleton City Council members have voted to override the first-ever veto by Mayor Tim Hanna.

Members voted 11-5 on a question about workers compensation claims.

Hanna had never vetoed a move by the city council since he took office. The decision Wednesday night means the city’s fringe benefits policy will reimburse city workers for the first three days of their workers compensation claim.

Alderman Jim Clemons said if workers are losing money, they might return to work too soon and make their injury more serious.

The mayor said the benefit exceeds what state law allows. He says beyond vacation, the city of Appleton offers workers 6 days of paid time off each year and they can carry up to 3 days per year to compensate for an unexpected claim.
