GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) - A couple who own a Green Bay liquor store have pled not guilty to charges of welfare fraud.
56-year-old Gurnek Basanti and his 52-year-old wife Gurdeep Basanti are charged with letting people use QUEST cards to purchase tobacco and liquor at Beach Road Liquor.
QUEST cards work like debit cards, allowing qualified low-income residents to buy food under Wisconsin's Food Share program.
Prosecutors say the Basantis would charge double the amount requested to the QUEST cards. The two are due back in court on November 19. No trial date has been set.
Beach Road Liquor was the target of a months-long investigation.
