Soundtrack albums aren't as popular as they once were in the '80s and '90s, but the soundtrack for The Hunger Games will be the exception to the rule.  Billboard reports that the album, which features songs by Arcade Fire , The Decemberists and more, is on track to debut at #1 on the album chart.

Sales of the disc are predicted to hit 150 to 170 thousand copies.  If the album does debut at #1, it'll be the first theatrical film soundtrack to do so since Michael Jackson's This Is It, back in 2009, in the wake of Jackson's death.

The Hunger Games soundtrack is not so much a collection of songs that are in the movie as it is a collection of songs "inspired by" the movie.  According to the Wall Street Journal , only three of the album's songs actually play during the film, and those come during the closing credits.

The Wall Street Journal reports that sales of soundtracks have declined 79 percent since they peaked in 1998.  While the soundtracks for the Twilight films have done well, selling a combined 5.1 million copies, according to Nielsen Soundscan, they haven't come close to the blockbuster soundtrack sales of the past, like for The Bodyguard and Dirty Dancing.
