MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - College football’s training camps are still a month away – but stars are already being named to “watch lists” for this December’s national awards.
University of Wisconsin senior running back Montee Ball is one of 65 early candidates for the Maxwell Award, given each year to college football’s top player.
And junior linebacker Chris Borland returns to the list of possible candidates for Bednarik Award, given to the nation’s top defensive player. Both were named Monday.
Ball is the nation’s top returning rusher with 3,310 career yards on the ground. He needs 18 rushing touchdowns and 17 total scores to tie NCAA records in each category.
Borland was second in the Big Ten with 143 tackles last year, and he tied for 12th nationally with 19 tackles for losses – the most by a middle linebacker in the top division last season.
