Wis. AG Van Hollen responds to calls for new gun restrictions

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Wisconsin’s attorney general says some politicians have made a “knee jerk” reaction by proposing new gun restrictions in the four days after the Connecticut school shootings.

Republican JB Van Hollen is not for-or-against any related legislation at the moment. But he did tell the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel he did not believe a ban on assault rifles would have made any difference in the Newtown rampage.

Twenty elementary students and six adults were killed by a gunman’s semi-automatic rifle with a high-capacity magazine.

Van Hollen told the paper he wants to support quote, “anything (that) people can show me will reasonably reduce horrible, senseless acts of violence like this.”

The attorney general says he likes the idea of limiting access to firearms by the mentally ill – and spending the money to put armed police officers in schools. He said he’s most skeptical about gun control proposals – or broadening Wisconsin’s concealed weapons law to let adults carry hidden heat in schools.

State GOP finance co-chair Alberta Darling has said Wisconsin should stop advertising where people are most vulnerable by not being allowed to carry a gun.
