Last Place Case is Rare

Among the 54 charges contained in the indictment against Last Place on Earth owner Jim Carlson and three employees, those alleging violations of the Controlled Substances Analogue Enforcement Act are the most rare, bringing added significance to a case that likely will be followed nation-wide. The Act, passed by Congress in 1986, aims to prevent drug dealers and underground chemists from evading federal drug laws by manufacturing and distributing substances with molecular structures only slightly modified from those of a controlled substance.

Jeanne Cooney, with the U.S. Attorney's Office in Minneapolis, said that her office has rarely, if ever, levied a charge using the CSAEA, and that there are few cases nationwide who have successfully done so.  With the sale and use of designer drugs skyrocketing, law enforcement agencies across the country will be tuned in to see how this case plays out.
